Dear Western Parents and Families:

You may have heard from your Western student about contract negotiations between the University and its Librarians & Archivists.

The University has been in negotiations with UWOFA-LA (Librarians and Archivists) since April 26, 2011 working to renew the group’s second contract, which ended June 30, 2011. The 51 members of the bargaining unit are represented by the University of Western Ontario Faculty Association.

Currently, the University and UWOFA-LA are continuing talks, with meetings scheduled for
September 6 and 7.

However, UWOFA-LA will be in a legal strike position as of 12:01 a.m. on Thursday, September 8, the first day of classes.

Librarians and Archivists play an important role at Western and we remain hopeful that a labour disruption can be avoided.

However, the University is putting a number of plans in place to ensure we can minimize disruption to our students, faculty, staff and the community should a labour disruption occur.

What will this mean for your student?

CLASSES:
In the event of a labour disruption, all Western students will be required to attend all classes as usual.

LIBRARY SERVICES:
It is expected that all campus libraries will remain open and most library services will be available, including borrowing and accessing physical materials, accessing electronic materials, directional services, and reference source assistance. However, highly subject specific, in-depth reference services may not be available. Libraries at the three Affiliated University Colleges (Brescia, Huron and King’s) and at St. Peter’s Seminary would not be affected by this labour disruption.

LONDON TRANIST:
London Transit (LTC) buses will not enter Western property in the event of a labour disruption. Alternative route information can be found online at http://uwo.ca/labourupdate/. Please note all regular bus stops on the roads surrounding campus (Western Road, Richmond Street, and Windermere Road) will run normally. Note, Aboutown services between Western and the Affiliated University Colleges and Paratransit will still operate during a labour disruption.

UPDATES:
During this period, Western parents and family members can stay up to date on what is happening through the following channels:

• WEB: Updates will be posted at http://uwo.ca/labourupdate/, which can be found off of the University’s home page at www.uwo.ca. Detailed FAQs can be found on this site, as well as information about how to safely cross picket lines.
• SOCIAL MEDIA: Parents and families are encouraged to join Western’s official Facebook page (www.facebook.com/pages/London-ON/The-University-of-Western-Ontario/7616007794) and Twitter feed (http://twitter.com/westernu) in order to be alerted when new updates are posted online.
• EMAIL: All students will also receive updates on significant events via their Western email account.

We sincerely regret any inconvenience students may experience in the event of a labour disruption and appreciate your patience and understanding during this time.

Should you have any questions, please email inquiries@uwo.ca

Thank you.
